Golden pizza monkey bread with melted cheese between the rolls, with marinara sauce for dipping

Pizza Monkey Bread

By Elizabeth Ciobanu ·

This tear-and-share loaf is simple to put together and even more irresistible to eat.

I love having some recipes in my repertoire that are fun and easy for kids to help make, and this one definitely fits the bill. It's simple to put together and even more irresistible to eat.

Serve as a party snack, or make it a fun twist on family pizza night. Just be sure to make extra, as these will disappear fast!

Why is it called monkey bread? Because all those little monkeys will get their paws in there and tear into it! It's also commonly called tear-and-share bread, but my kids always call it pizza monkey bread 'cause that's just more fun.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb pizza dough, or 1/2 of this pizza dough recipe
  • 24 slices of pepperoni
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 clove garlic
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1/4 cup grated parmesan cheese
  • Pizza sauce of your choice

Instructions

  1. Divide the pizza dough into 12 equal pieces. Do this by shaping the dough into a 6-inch square. Cut the square into 4 strips, then cut each strip into 3 pieces.
  2. Shape each piece into a ball by pinching the corners underneath. Keep the balls covered while working with one at a time.
  3. Press a ball into a flat 3-inch disc. Place 1 piece of pepperoni in the center, then 1 tbsp of shredded mozzarella, and top with 1 more slice of pepperoni.
  4. Stretch the sides up around the filling and pinch to close. Turn upside down and place in a parchment-paper-lined 8-inch springform pan or cake pan.
  5. Repeat with the remaining dough balls.
  6. Cover the pan with plastic wrap or a kitchen towel and allow to rise for 45 minutes to 1 hour, until the dough is slightly puffed up and pieces are touching.
  7. When the rise time is almost done, preheat oven to 400°F.
  8. Warm 1 tbsp of olive oil with 1 clove of garlic in the microwave for 30 seconds. Brush on top of the filled rolls with a pastry brush, then spread the parmesan cheese on top.
  9. Bake for 30-35 minutes until browned on top.
  10. Remove from oven and allow to cool for 10 minutes before serving. Serve with warm pizza sauce for dipping.
